A family trade since 1890

My name is Gary Rice. My family has sharpened blades in Los Angeles since 1890. That year my great-grandfather, Samuel Rice, opened a woodworking shop on Spring Street.

He built doors, cabinets, and wagon beds for a city of 50,000 people. My grandfather, Walter Rice, took over the shop in 1931. He kept a sharpening bench by the front window. Carpenters from across the city brought him chisels, plane irons, and hand saws. He taught me to hold an angle on a whetstone when I was nine.

I have sharpened knives for more than forty years. I use the same stones, the same bench, and the same rule my grandfather used: an edge is done when it cuts clean paper, not before. Today I sharpen kitchen, Japanese, and bread knives for homes and restaurants across Los Angeles.
